On Wednesday July 18, the nation celebrated Madiba’s 94th birthday by giving back to various communities.
Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life fighting for a free, equal and democratic South Africa. People around the world are encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes doing something positive for their communities in honour of Nelson Mandela, as did SuperSport United FC and the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI) on Wednesday. Together they organized a special day for 100 children from Stellenbosch’s largest township Kayamandi.
The celebrations took place at the university’s FIFA two star artificial turf where the SuperSport players led by captain Thabo September took over the coaching reins.
The players organised four stations with different football skills and exercises, where they instructed and guided the future stars from four Kayamandi schools. When the coaching clinic finished after 67 minutes, everybody came together to sing ’Happy Birthday Madiba’ as well as to share a huge birthday cake.
“Mandela has done enough for our country and through his tremendous achievements it is a better place today. If we can do something small to support Madiba’s legacy in the field of our expertise, SuperSport United FC and myself will always be available“ explained Gavin Hunt the mastermind behind this great event. In the organisation of the event, Hunt‘s team took hands with SUSPI to make this Mandela Day unforgetable for the participating youth from Kayamandi.
One overwhelmed participant from Kayamandi High School said: “I had an awesome time with my idols from SuperSport, they made me feel like I am a part of their team. Thanks to everybody, who organized this amazing day, which I will never forget. Thanks to Mr Mandela, without whom these events for black teenagers like myself would have never been possible.“
SuperSport United FC has been on a training camp at SUSPI’s since Saturday and on Tuesday both parties heeded the call and fullfilled their responsibility towards the children of Stellenbosch, in a manner which would make even Nelson Mandela proud.
Happy Birthday Madiba!
